LAC Databook: Selected Economic and Social Data

The LAC Databook 2004 presents selected economic and social data for the Latin America and Caribbean region. The publication includes data from 1970 to 2003, sourced from official country sources and leading international institutions. The data is organized by sector, including democracy, economic profiles, poverty, health, education, environment, US-LAC trade, and US assistance.

Democracy indicators in the region show a mixed picture. Freedom ratings, as measured by the Freedom House, indicate that some countries have made progress in consolidating democracy, while others continue to face challenges. Political rights and civil liberties are also assessed, with some countries scoring higher than others in these areas. Economic freedom is another key indicator, with some countries performing better than others in terms of economic stability and growth.

Economic profiles for the region highlight the diversity of economic conditions across countries. National income, gross domestic product estimates, and external debt are some of the key indicators used to assess the economic performance of countries in the region. Population growth rates, population size, and urban unemployment rates are also important indicators of economic development.

Poverty rates in the region vary significantly, with some countries having made significant progress in reducing poverty, while others continue to face high levels of poverty. Incidence of poverty, distribution of income, and real average wages are some of the key indicators used to assess poverty levels in the region.

Health indicators in the region show a mixed picture, with some countries having made significant progress in improving health outcomes, while others continue to face challenges. Infant mortality rates, mortality rates, life expectancy at birth, and reproductive health are some of the key indicators used to assess health outcomes in the region.

Education indicators in the region highlight the importance of education in promoting economic development and reducing poverty. Literacy rates, public expenditure on education, and gross and net enrollment ratios are some of the key indicators used to assess education outcomes in the region.

Environment indicators in the region highlight the importance of sustainable development and environmental protection. National protection systems, fisheries production, water management, and energy consumption are some of the key indicators used to assess environmental outcomes in the region.

US-LAC trade and US assistance are also important areas of focus in the LAC Databook 2004. Total US exports to LAC, US direct investment position in LAC, and US assistance to the Caribbean, Central America, and South America are some of the key indicators used to assess US-LAC trade and assistance.

The LAC Databook 2004 provides a comprehensive overview of the economic and social development of the Latin America and Caribbean region. The data presented in the publication can be used to assess the progress made by countries in the region in achieving the Millennium Development Goals and to identify areas where further assistance is needed.
