Caribbean Marine Biodiversity Program (CMBP) Assessment of Mangroves in the Protected Area of Three Bays, Northeast Haiti

The Caribbean Marine Biodiversity Program (CMBP) conducted an assessment of mangroves in the Protected Area of Three Bays (PA3B) in Northeast Haiti. The assessment aimed to evaluate the status of mangrove ecosystems in the region and identify potential threats to their conservation.

The PA3B is a coastal protected area located in the northeastern part of Haiti, encompassing three bays: Caracol/Limonade Bay, Fort Liberté Bay, and Lagon aux Boeufs. The area is characterized by a diverse range of mangrove species, including Rhizophora mangle, Avicennia germinans, Laguncularia racemosa, and Conocarpus erectus. Mangroves play a crucial role in maintaining coastal ecosystems, providing habitat for a variety of marine species and protecting shorelines from erosion.

The assessment involved a comprehensive survey of mangrove ecosystems in the PA3B, including the measurement of tree diameter at breast height (DBH), tree height, and species identification. The survey revealed a high degree of disturbance in the mangrove ecosystems, with signs of human impact, such as deforestation, pollution, and overfishing. The most affected areas were found to be sector I, Caracol/Limonade Bay, and sector II, Fort Liberté Bay.

The assessment also included a water quality assessment, which revealed high levels of turbidity and nutrient pollution in the waters surrounding the mangroves. This pollution is likely to have a negative impact on the health of the mangrove ecosystems and the marine species that depend on them.

The results of the assessment highlight the need for conservation efforts to protect the mangrove ecosystems in the PA3B. Recommendations include the establishment of a mangrove nursery to promote the growth of new mangrove seedlings, the implementation of sustainable fishing practices to reduce the impact of fishing on the mangrove ecosystems, and the development of a waste management plan to reduce pollution in the area.

The assessment also identified the importance of involving local communities in the conservation efforts, as they have a deep understanding of the mangrove ecosystems and can play a crucial role in their protection. The CMBP is working with local stakeholders to develop a community-based conservation plan that will help to protect the mangrove ecosystems in the PA3B and promote sustainable livelihoods for local communities.

Overall, the assessment of mangroves in the PA3B highlights the importance of conservation efforts to protect these critical ecosystems and the need for a collaborative approach that involves local communities, government agencies, and other stakeholders.
