The Leadership, Management & Governance (LMG) Project is a cooperative agreement between USAID and Management Sciences for Health (MSH) aimed at strengthening health systems in low- and middle-income countries. The project focuses on building the capabilities of individuals and institutions that lead, manage, and govern in the health sectors of these countries. Key areas of intervention include innovation and health systems strengthening, monitoring, evaluation, and research, and advocacy and partnerships.

Innovation and health systems strengthening is a critical component of the LMG Project. This involves identifying and promoting innovative solutions to address health system challenges, as well as strengthening the capacity of health systems to deliver high-quality services. The LMG Project operates in several countries, including Afghanistan, Benin, Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Haiti, Honduras, Libya, Ukraine, and Vietnam. Each country program has its unique set of challenges and opportunities, and the project works closely with local stakeholders to develop and implement context-specific solutions. Country program highlights include the establishment of a health management information system in Afghanistan, the strengthening of the health workforce in Benin, and the development of a national health policy in Cote d’Ivoire.

Cross-cutting themes are also an important aspect of the LMG Project. These include evidence synthesis, generation, and use, governance, knowledge exchange, transfer networks, gender and LMG, professionalization of health services management, and public and private sector partnerships. The project recognizes the importance of these themes in achieving its overall objectives and has developed strategies to address them.

The LMG Project also places a strong emphasis on program management and support. This includes overall project management, reporting against the performance monitoring plan, and success stories. The project has a robust monitoring and evaluation system in place to track progress and identify areas for improvement. The project also engages in knowledge exchange and transfer networks to share best practices and lessons learned with other stakeholders.

The LMG Project has made significant progress in its second year, with notable achievements in several countries. These include the establishment of a health management information system in Afghanistan, the strengthening of the health workforce in Benin, and the development of a national health policy in Cote d’Ivoire. The project has also made significant progress in its cross-cutting themes, including evidence synthesis, generation, and use, governance, and knowledge exchange.

Overall, the LMG Project is making a significant contribution to strengthening health systems in low- and middle-income countries. The project’s focus on building the capabilities of individuals and institutions that lead, manage, and govern in the health sectors of these countries is critical to achieving its overall objectives.
