Transaction Lead Database and Pipeline Analysis for Haiti – Work Order 2015-04

The transaction lead database developed by CrossBoundary consists of 105 firms seeking capital in Haiti. The database was created through direct contact with each company and in-depth interviews with over 70 enterprises. The remaining data was collected via custom survey from 66 companies. Each row in the database includes a company name and brief description, sector, growth stage, and size, past financing, current investment needs, and contact information.

CrossBoundary uses a scoring system to guide the selection of companies for the investment pipeline. The scoring system evaluates two criteria: fit check and investment potential. The fit check assesses whether the investment fits the scope of a potential investment facilitation program, considering factors such as the target financing need scope, investment sought, and expected job creation. The investment potential score is calculated based on past reported investment and 2014 revenue, as well as the presence of audited financials and the firm’s business model.

Using this scoring system, CrossBoundary selected 23 companies to include in the investment pipeline. Each investment opportunity is profiled at length, including a company overview, transaction overview, and transaction score. The company overview provides a synopsis of the firm’s current operations, past financing, and previous challenges accessing capital. The transaction overview summarizes the investment, including the amount of capital sought, preferred investment type, and use of funds. The transaction score determines the potential impact and viability of the investment.

The firms in the investment pipeline represent a wide range of sectors, with agribusiness and food processing being the largest sector represented, accounting for 27 firms. Other sectors include manufacturing, construction, and services. The firms vary in size, with some being mature and prominent, while others are small and young. The investment needs of the firms also vary, with some seeking debt, equity, or grants to support their growth.

CrossBoundary’s analysis of the investment pipeline reveals that mature and prominent firms can access cheap debt but need support to secure equity. Mid-size firms face high interest rates and need lower-interest debt alternatives or equity. Small and young firms cannot secure debt and need basic access to credit. The investment facilitation program can unlock a pipeline of strong investment opportunities in Haiti, supporting the growth of firms and creating jobs.

The investment pipeline provides a comprehensive overview of the investment opportunities in Haiti, highlighting the diverse financing needs of firms across various sectors. The pipeline serves as a guide for investment facilitation programs, enabling them to target firms with the greatest potential for growth and job creation. By supporting these firms, investment facilitation programs can contribute to the development of Haiti’s economy and improve the lives of its citizens.
